If you have timber decking for your home’s patio or pool area, it can be really quite beautiful and can last you a very long time if given the proper care. However, if you don’t take the necessary precautions, it will wear out and eventually have to be replaced.  You can save yourself a big headache from spending more money on new wood by making sure that you follow these key steps in the weatherization of your timber.

Find the right material

Don’t just buy any old timber off the shelf. It pays to do some research, either online or by asking around as to what kinds of woods are available. The two important things that you should be asking are – is the wood pressurized and is it treated to withstand the elements over time as a decking material? If you start out with a poor timber product, you are just limiting the life of your deck and wasting good money in the process.

Install it the right way

Installing timber for your pool or patio deck the right way means letting the wood breathe once you have laid it down.  Most installers recommend that you wait a few days prior to sealing or staining the material for the first time. Once the wood has been allowed to breathe, you can finish it off with a clear sealant or a wood stain. Just make sure you get a stain that is for an outdoor project and not indoors.

Give your deck a long life

To be able to enjoy your deck for a long time, it’s important that you maintain it on a yearly basis.  This entails having your deck pressure washed and cleaned with a wood deck cleaning agent. After having it cleaned thoroughly, you should stain or seal it off after it has had time to dry for at least a day. If you didn’t use a clear finish or sealant the first time round, then it’s best to stick with the same stain colour.

Timber decking can last you a really long time if you find wood that is treated and pressurized, is installed properly, and is maintained on a yearly basis through pressure washing and cleansing with a wood cleaning agent.
